What to see For hundreds of years Brazil has symbolised the great escape into an ancient, tropical paradise. Rio's inhabitants are known as the Cariocas, and they pursue pleasure like no other people: beaches and the body beautiful; samba and beer; football and the local firewater, cachaa. Outside of Rio is a landscape as diverse as the people who inhabit it. A rich colonial history exists from the eighteenth-century Portuguese architecture. The jungles and rivers of the Amazon, home to lush vegetation and exotic wildlife, incite notions of exploration amongst the intrepid, while the thundering Iguacu Falls are simply a spectacular wonder.
