What to see The eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus, synonymous with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, is cherished by visitors for its rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, rocky hills and forest-covered mountains. The island's geography makes it possible to ski or hike in the morning (depending on the season) and sunbathe on a beach in the afternoon. Larnaca is a lively seaside resort and harbour; Limassol is the island's main port and centre of the wine industry. In Nicosia, the island's famously divided Greek/Turkish capital, the charming Old City is contained within 16th Century Venetian fortifications that divide it from the tree-lined boulevards of the modern city.
