What to see The word `Jamaica' is derived from an Arawak word `Xaymaca' meaning `land of wood and water'. With more than a hundred rivers, dozens of waterfalls, acre upon acre of lush green forests and of course miles of golden coastline, whoever named the island was not far wrong! In Caribbean terms this island is large with considerable distances between many of the resort destinations, allowing each to develop their own identity without losing the Jamaican appeal so loved by many. Montego Bay, the island's tourist capital, is a bustling town. Ocho Rios, further West along the North Coast, is an original market town made world famous by the magnificent Dunn's River Falls. Negril is a peaceful destination enhanced by a stunning seven mile beach.
