What to see No superlatives can do proper justice to this spectacular destination, a garland of islands strung across the equator, each fringed with powder soft white beaches, crystal clear lagoons and submerged underwater gardens which are home to hundreds of species of fish and countless shapes and sizes of coral and shells - truly one of the last unspoilt places on earth. The Republic of the Maldives boasts a chain of no less than 1,190 low-lying coral islands with many being no more than two metres above sea level.
