Hotel Description
The hotel Pousada Dona Maria I is situated in the square in front of the Queluz National Palace, known as The Portuguese Versailles.
This beautiful Rococo palace, which is open to visitors, was the summer residence of the Portuguese Royal Family during the 18th century.
The palace was built by Dom Pedro III and was the home of Queen Maria I during the thirty nine years that she ruled Portugal until 1816.
During this period firework displays were held with the scenes reflected in the lakes. Bullfights were also held in the courtyard.
Unfortunately Queen Maria is mainly remembered for being completely mad!
In the main palace, the mirror lined Throne Room is embellished within tricate ‘rocaille' gilt carvings and the museum houses an important art collection, once owned by the royal family.
