This Pousada has the accommodation in the restored buildings of a 13th century former convent of Sao Francisco in the centre of Beja.

The city was founded by Julius Ceasar in 48 BC and was originally named Pax Julia to remember the peace treaty between the Romans and the Lusitanians signed here.
The town later became famous as the home of the nun, Mariana Alceforado. This young nun lived in the convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceicao in the1600s.

She fell in love with a French soldier, and on his return to France she wrote several love letters to him. In later years the translation of these became internationally famous as "Letters of a Portuguese Nun". The originals of these translations have never been discovered.

There are thirty four rooms and one suite in the hotel. All of the bedrooms have a private bathroom. The building is air conditioned and there is a lift.

It has swimming pool, tennis court and snooker room. Other activities in the locality include fishing, shooting, horse riding, carriage tours and archery.

The Pousada has lift and there are conference facilites available.
