| Hotel Description Opened in 1899, the fledging hotel was positioned on a granite bluff overlooking the Nile. The location was a perfect spot from which guests could enjoy availability of the hamlet of Aswan. The Old cataract hotel took its name from the spectacular effect created by the collision of the river with the granite barrier of the land, the first cataract on the Nile. The long and illustrious saga of the Old Cataract began in 1899. The clientele has been always a mix of the famous figures including Sir Winston Churchill, Agha Khan, King Farouk and Lady Diana. The hotel served the inspiration for novelist Agatha Christie, who went to write Death on the Nile. The Sofitel Old Cataract is surrounded by magnificent gardens and overlooks the unparalleled panorama of the Elephantine Island and the Agha Khans Mausoleum. Just a short drive away, the famous temples of Philae and Abu Simbel are found.

Aswan is one of the driest inhabited places in the world; as of early 2001, the last rain here was 6 years ago. In Nubian settlements they generally do not bother to roof all of the rooms in their houses
