The journey from the airport to the hotel took 3 hours but is only about 60km away. The only word that can sum up the drive is 'Nightmare'! Your vehicle has to contend with other things on the road such as cows, dogs, bicycles, mopeds, pedestrians, lorries, buses racing each other, tuk-tuks, cars overtaking on blind corners etc. I strongly advise passengers to keep their eyes firmly shut to avoid any panic attempts at finding the invisible brake pedal. On arriving at the hotel it was a wow moment. The mini bus drove over a railway line and into what at first seemed like a dark grotto. On exiting the van you happen across a teak staircase that takes you up into the batik ceilinged lobby. I was welcomed with an ice cold fruit cocktail whilst I checked in and then was led to my superior room # 803. The superior rooms are pretty large with tiled floor, double or twin beds, A/C, ceiling fan, large walk in shower, large sink and mirror that is seperate from the shower area, safe, TV that has good Hollywood films in English, tea making facilities, mini bar, louvered shutters, nice balcony overlooking the gardens and if you stretch you may be able to see a bit of the ocean. Just past the reflecting pool is the bar/lounge area is very quiet during the day but if you want to escape the tropical heat, you will find relief here because they have the A/C cranked. The beers are very large and the light snacks they give are very spicy. The buffet restaurant seats alot of people and my previous experiences of buffets at other hotels I have stayed at were not good. The buffets at this hotel are fabulous. All of the hot food is piping hot and changed regularly. The fruit and dessert selections are endless and everything is so clean and well cared for. On Fridays during dinner the head chef opens his kitchens up and invites guests for a tour and it is great to see how all the preparation going into the next days menu. Downstairs is the a la carte menu which is a great dining experience too. The freeform swimming pool is a great way to cool down and the pool bar is right beside it. Sun loungers and towels are available and staff will move the loungers to where you want them. The gardens are pretty large with lots of palm trees to help give a bit shade if needed. The beach is at the end of the gardens with sand stretching both ways. The sea conditions can be rather rough in June and as the waves were pounding into the shore relentlessly I decided to pass on a dip in the Indian Ocean. One down side of the beach area is that lots of touts hang out here and can be a nuisance. There is a spa in the grounds and I recommend the massages. I have never felt so energised before. I opted for the massage that includes steam therapy, head massage, herbal bath etc - all for about £20 The river is at the other end of the grounds and this is where the watersports take place and the river BBQ departs. Jet skis and water skiing seem to be the main ways of having fun on the river. Watch out for the large monitor lizards and little crocs that swim in the river. All of the staff at the hotel were so friendly and outward going I got really embarrassed when they all remembered my name but I could not remember theirs. They honestly seemed happy to see me each time we bumped into each other. On my departure some of the staff had even teamed together to buy me a souvenir of Sri Lanka and I still receive Christmas cards from the staff in the restaurant. I have been to many hotels around the world and for me this hotel has the feel and look of a 5 star with the friendliness of a family B+B. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone and I can hardly wait until I go back there again.
