| Hotel Description Built for the Archbishop of San Francisco in 1904, this French chateau mansion is now a grand San Francisco bed and breakfast located on charming Alamo Square Park. The mansion is surrounded by San Francisco's most plentiful collection of Victorian architecture including the famous "Painted Ladies". Spectacularly crafted woodwork, antiques and a sweeping staircase grace the varied common areas.
Luxury Hotel Accommodation The Archbishop's Mansion offers overnight accommodations in fifteen guestrooms and suites, each named after an opera. All rooms are individually decorated in period antiques reflecting the theme of each opera.
The canopied King and Queen beds are dressed with crocheted lace coverlets, fluffy duvets and hand-sewn decorative pillow shams; and the full private bathrooms are fitted with antique wood or marble vanities and are stocked with luxury spa products and Kimono-style bathrobes. Each guestroom also includes the following amenities:
Deluxe continental breakfast delivered to your room each morning, along with a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle.
An invitation to the General Manager's wine & cheese reception in the Mansion's Parlor from six to seven o'clock each evening.
Cable television, VCR, CD player, phone with data port and in-room honor basket.
Free parking in our private lot, on a space available basis.
Wireless high-speed internet access in every room and access to a complete business center (Wireless access is $7.95 per day; use of the Business Center is free).
Intimate Charmer Guestrooms
Our two Intimate Charmer rooms are the smallest guestrooms, perfect for the short-stay traveler who does not require a fireplace or room to entertain. They are located towards the back of the Mansion and are extremely quiet. Roll-away beds cannot be accommodated in these rooms.
Daughter of the Regiment: Although this is the smallest room in the house, Daughter of the Regiment is a charming room with a stunning hand-quilted canopy over the Queen bed, a beautiful antique armoire that serves as a closet, and a small marble-topped dresser. A sliding stained glass pocket door separates the bedroom from the bathroom with stall shower. Great downtown view.
La Bohème: Only slightly larger than Daughter of the Regiment, La Bohème boasts an elaborate canopy over the Queen bed, a wicker entertainment center and dresser, a table with two chairs and a small closet. The bathroom contains a tub/shower combination and a window facing North, providing bright natural light. Partial downtown view.
Intimate Fireplace Guestrooms
Intimate Fireplace rooms offer approximately fifty percent more space than our Intimate Charmer rooms, with more spacious bathrooms as well. Each contains a small working fireplace and a table with two chairs. Manon and Aida can accommodate roll-away beds, but with very little room to spare.
Manon: a charming corner room with views of the downtown San Francisco skyline and bright morning sunlight. The Queen bed sits beneath a lace canopy and the elegant marble bathroom boasts an antique tile stall shower.
Aida: Aida is a long rectangular room with a curved entry door, a lovely Queen canopied bed and a great view of the downtown San Francisco skyline from its single East-facing window. The large bathroom contains a shower/tub combination and a window above the vanity, which provides bright natural light.
Italian Girl in Algiers: Tucked away in the quiet Northwest corner of the Mansion, what Italian Girl in Algiers lacks in views it makes up for in cozy charm. The fireside sitting area adds a country bed and breakfast feel, and the bathroom contains a shower/tub combination.
Romantic Fireplace Guestrooms
Among the most requested in the Mansion, our Romantic Fireplace rooms are the most elegantly appointed and spacious non-suite guestrooms. All three rooms face south towards Alamo Square Park, allowing for both morning and afternoon sun. Elaborate mantelpieces grace the fireplaces. All can accommodate roll-away beds.
Tosca: Adorned with dark wood paneling and deep rust-colored fabrics, this former private dining room of the Archbishop now features a full length free standing mirror, a writing desk and a lovely fireplace at the foot of the Queen canopied bed. Oriental rugs cover the hardwood floors, and a sitting area near the corner windows makes a cozy spot for breakfast and provides views of Alamo Square Park. Stepping up into the bathroom, you'll find all the usual elegant accents along with a shower/tub combination.
Madame Butterfly: Madame Butterfly is a lovely bright room with an Italian marble fireplace set into a pillar in the center of the room, and one of the most magnificent armoires in the Mansion serves as the closet. In addition to the Queen canopied bed, the antique vanity is located in the bedroom, while the bathroom contains a stall shower, as well as an additional small armoire.
Turandot: Turandot is a spacious room accented in warm red and green tones. An exquisite Korean antique chest sits beside the Queen canopied bed, two leather wing back chairs and a small coffee table front the fireplace and a lovely large armoire serves as the closet. The spacious bathroom contains a beautiful black marble-topped vanity, a floor-to-ceiling dressing mirror and a shower/tub combination.
Romantic Jacuzzi Guestrooms
Extremely spacious bathrooms with two-person jetted jacuzzi tubs are the distinguishing feature of our Romantic Jacuzzi rooms. Tucked away in the back corner of the Mansion, they are very quiet and private. These rooms do not have fireplaces, but the bathrooms are so large that each can accommodate a roll-away bed!
Romeo & Juliet: Perhaps the most feminine room in the Mansion, Romeo & Juliet is accented with pastel hues and floral motifs. The room features a Queen canopied bed, a light distressed-wood dresser and a small table with two armchairs. A dresser and small settee grace the large bathroom.
Der Rosenkavalier: Originally the Archbishop's private library, Der Rosenkavalier is a very distinctive oval room. The Queen bed sits beneath a beautiful lace canopy, curved wooden doors lead to His and Hers closets and the original curved redwood bookcases compliment the dusty rose hues in the room. You'll also find a large red leather sofa in the bathroom!
La Traviata Suite
The perfect two-room family suite, you enter La Traviata through the dark wood-paneled living room with 14-foot ceilings and a stunning chandelier. The living room features a fireplace, Queen pull-out sofabed, wing back chair, coffee table and a lovely breakfast table with two chairs with a view of the front garden. Proceeding through the bathroom with a stall shower, you enter the bedroom with a King canopied bed (one of only two in the Mansion) and a gorgeous beveled mirror armoire.
Cosi fan tutte Suite
With the layout and feel of a small apartment, the Cosi Fan Tutte suite is decorated in baby blue hues and has a light, airy feel. The bedroom has an antique wooden Queen-bed with French doors opening into the sitting room. The beautiful Italian marble fireplace in the sitting room can be enjoyed from either room, and the lovely window seat overlooking Alamo Square Park is the perfect place to curl up with a good book. The large bathroom provides ample space for bathing in the tub/shower combination.
Carmen Suite
Carmen is a lovely suite with soft rose tones that is perfect for a romantic getaway. The bedroom features a Queen canopied bed and a love seat with a small coffee table adjacent to the large fireplace. A small sitting area by the window provides a lovely view of Alamo Square Park and is a perfect breakfast spot.
The elaborate bathroom is the truly distinctive feature of this suite. Equally as large as the bedroom, an antique Victorian claw foot tub occupies the center of the room directly in front of a second fireplace! The bathroom also features a beautiful beveled mirror and silk screen providing privacy for the commode, a small makeup table, a separate stall shower, and a large antique armoire.
Gypsy Baron Suite
Formerly the Mansion's chapel, the Gypsy Baron suite is perfect for honeymooners and families alike. This spacious studio suite is the largest single guestroom in the Mansion and can accommodate up to three roll-away beds! Situated on the Southeast corner, the suite offers lovely views of the downtown San Francisco skyline as well as Alamo Square Park.
The room features a King canopied bed, an enormous decorative hand-painted chest, a beautiful mahogany fireplace and a leather sofa and two chairs surrounding a large coffee table. The bathroom, with its deep soaking tub for two, separate stall shower and even a small refrigerator, is unique.
Don Giovanni Presidential Suite
For those who demand the ultimate in opulence and grandeur, this 1200 square foot suite comprised the most private of the Archbishop's chambers in the Mansion. In addition to a fireplace, sitting area and lovely period antiques, the very large, elegant sleeping chambers are dominated by a magnificent four poster canopied bed carved in 1639 in Italy (Note: The bed is fitted with a custom-sized mattress, a few inches narrower than a Queen). One of the largest bathrooms in the Mansion affords plenty of room for the antique vanity, soaking tub and separately-enclosed seven-head shower!
You may not be able to resist the temptation to invite others to share a cocktail or a glass of wine in your enormous connecting Salon, which is graced by the largest fireplace in the Mansion, two leather sofas and wing back chairs and a built-in mirrored breakfront displaying two large antique vases.
