Hotel Description
Architect Juli Capella has likened his white-marble façade for the Hotel Omm to an advent calendar. His intention wasn't purely aesthetic: he wanted to let in the light without compromising guests' privacy. Light is important to the owner, Grupo Tragaluz (tragaluz means 'skylight'), which also owns an impressive collection of meticulously designed restaurants. On the ground floor, a vast open space accommodating lounge, cocktail bar, tasting tables and restaurant ends with a glass-fronted courtyard garden with giant bamboo and stainless-steel plant sculptures that reflect the light and throw shadows onto the dining tables. Upstairs, sexy, Matrix-like corridors lined in black rubber are lit by fibre-optic strips.
The rooms are clean, functional and covetable, with bedrooms and bathrooms separated by a 'floating', white-lacquered aluminium unit lit from below. Oak floors keep things warm. Hotel Omm has staged a coup in recruiting the Roca brothers from the two-Michelin-star Celler de Can Roca in Girona. There is a buzz about the restaurant they have helped create, with its menu of 'half' portions to encourage experimentation (with wines by the glass to match) and desserts inspired by perfumes (for example, 'Carolina' by Carolina Herrera). Apparently, the chefs use a precision cooking technique known as la cocina al vacio. Your waiter will explain everything, with enthusiasm. In fact, the staff seem just as excited to be here as the diners, who include a healthy contingent of locals.
