Istanbul is one of Europe’s top tourism spots

Turkey’s largest city Istanbul has one of the highest tourism revenues in Europe, according to Deloitte.

Research published in the Hurriyet newspaper indicated that the city enjoyed 22.1 per cent growth in revenue from tourism last year.

Only Moscow and Paris rank higher than Istanbul, with the luxury holiday hotspot coming ahead of both Paris and Venice respectively.

Chairman of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO) Tanil Kucuk claimed that its success is in large parts due to its significance as a “cultural centre”.

Sukran Yurekli of the Tourism, Restaurant, Club Owners and Directors Association (TURYID) told Today’s Zaman that tourists make up 20 per cent of its member’s clientele.

Istanbul is now in the top 20 tourist destinations in the world, with around three million more visitors in 2007 compared to 2006.
